All you need to worry about is getting the two dots to align. There's a dowel pin on the cam and the crank has a keyway. If the dots are lined up you can't screw it up. Then get your #1 piston on TDC compression stroke (your timing mark on the crank should be close to zero). Drop the distributor in and the rotor should be pointing slightly. A timing chain connects the engine crankshaft to the camshaft so they rotate in time with one another. In older engine designs without an overhead camshaft, the timing chain is short and doesn't require a tensioner (see image). However, as carmakers began using overhead cam designs they were forced to incorporate much longer timing chains to span the distance between the crankshaft.
